What materials are the implants made of?
If you lose your tooth, you need a dental implant to get your smile back. The first implants were manufactured 30 years ago. But what of which materials were the dental implants produced? In the old days, the primary aim was to replace missing teeth, and later the aesthetic benefits played an important role. Here you will find information about the dental implant materials.
Dental implant materials – Titanium
Titanium implants are already being used for decades in dentistry to replace the missing teeth successfully. The titanium does not trigger any reaction in the body and is generally tolerated, but may be contaminated with small amounts of nickel and pewter, which can lead to a “titanium incompatibility” in some patients.
Prior to insertion, the material of the implant is roughened chemically or manually, this facilitates the connection between the implant and the bone. Thus, the implant grows better together with the jawbone.
Dental implant materials – Ceramic
Ceramic is used in medicine since the eighties. Today, implants made of zirconium oxide (ceramic) stand as an alternative to a titanium dental implant. This material is characterized by its color, so it can not only take the function of a natural tooth on, but also meets the high aesthetic demands through the white colour.
Ceramic is a tissue-friendly and biocompatible material. In contrast to metal, it can neither lead to intolerances in the body nor to any intolerance with any other metals.
Although intolerances are not being known, the implants made of ceramic have other medical disadvantages. Through the insulating effect of the ceramic, the gums are attacked by bacteria a little, but it there could be gingivitis around the dental implant.
Dental implant materials: Titanium or ceramic?
There are only these two different  materials that are being used for dental implants.
The dental implant materials are not subjected to aging processes, as both titanium and ceramic are completely tolerated and made of durable substances.
Despite of metal-intolerance, the predominant number of the material being used worldwide is titanium. The dental implant materials titanium and ceramic differ only in their aesthetic appearance and of course in their dental implant costs.
