Dental bone grafting

Methods, materials and procedures

What does the term dental bone grafting mean?

Dental bone grafting means that the jaw bone is complemented. Before the insertion of a dental implant, it needs to be ensured that the patient has a sufficient amount of bone mass.

When is dental bone grafting necessary?

The dentist must make sure that the patient has an adequate amount of jaw bone to host the dental implant. If this is not the case, dental bone grafting is necessary.Furthermore, it is important to know that in the period between the loss of the teeth and the implantation, the probability of bone loss (osteoporosis) is very high. Considering this issue, the implantation should be done as soon as possible after the loss of a teeth.

Which materials are used for dental bone grafting?

Bone transplantation serves for the reconstruction of damaged or lost teeth. Generally, there are different kinds of dental bone grafting materials. However, the following are the most common:

artificial bone replacement material, own bone mass (e.g. extracted from the jaw, chin or iliac crest), animal bone material (e.g. cow bone)
The artificial bone material is manufactured of synthetic materials, the structure of which imitates the human bone tissue. Evidently, the safest method is the transplantation of the patient’s own bone tissue (e.g. taken from the iliac crest), as the use of own bone tissue serves the healing process best. In this case, the bone particles are extracted from different body parts of the patient and are transplanted into the jaw bone.

How much does dental bone grafting cost?

The costs of dental bone grafting depend on the method of bone grafting. The costs of the operation, the type and the amount of bone grafting material must be taken into account. Then again, these are dependent on the individual: e.g. how many teeth have to be replaced, how much bone mass has to be replaced. Dental bone grafting costs are calculated per unit. What kind of dental bone grafting methods are there?

There are several kinds of dental bone grafting methods, such as bone augmentation, socket preservation and sinus lift. However, it needs to be individually decided with the patient, which type of dental bone grafting is most suitable and necessary for his or her case.

Sinus lift

Sinus lift is a special type of dental bone grafting, nevertheless it is the most used method. The floor of the maxillary sinus is lifted and complemented with bone replacement, so that the jaw bone becomes larger. This type of dental bone grafting is carried out usually within the same operating session as the dental implant placement. The costs for this type of dental bone grafting are approximately 550 € for one jaw side in Hungary.

Where can dental bone grafting be carried out?

In theory, dental bone grafting can be carried out by any oral surgeon who is qualified to do so. But it is advised to have a thorough look into the oral surgeon’s background. Our clinics and oral surgeons are very well prepared for dental bone grafting interventions.

What else can be done: nutrition for bone structure

To prevent bone loss (osteoporosis), one should also pay attention to the so-called bone building diet, especially since this disease occurs more often nowadays. Bone structure nutrition refers also to the fact that one should pay great attention to an appropriate daily intake of useful nutrients. Some foods are particularly unsuitable for a bone-building diet such as: white flour, refined sugar, protein, meat products, alcohol and beverages containing caffeine.
On the other hand, there are certain vitamins and mineral nutrients which influence the bone metabolism positively, so that an ideal bone structure nutrition is developed. Such vitamins and mineral nutrients are: Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin K as well as phosphorus, magnesium and manganese.
